Dance portraits for Rebecca in Chicago Summer 2021
As a photographer of dance and theater, I can tell pretty fast who is comfortable in front of a camera. Rebecca is one of those dancers.

One of the many things I love about her is her speed and confidence in making a location her own. The above photograph was on a bridge in downtown Chicago! She made it her own with no hesitation.

Here’s another example of her and Nata on top of a bridge with at least one fan noticing.

Don’t you just love it when a client does exactly what you want? Especially when they’re 2!! Mackenzie’s 2nd birthday party theme was donuts – my favorite!

This is another type of photography you don’t see me advertising too often. This is for an existing client that asked if I would do this for them. I’m more than happy to do this type of photography for clients!

I think I make the same face when I first see a donut!

I used to have these couches in my studio (no longer there). Since Mackenzie had a tutu on, I thought it would be cute to create a photo of her looking up at the dancers on the wall. Mom quickly put her on the couch for the first photo. What I didn’t realize at the time, she had a donut in her hand the entire time! This is NOT the reason why I don’t have the couch there anymore!! The couch was fine (never seen a neater 2 year old!)
Have a special milestone you would like me to capture for you and your family? Let me know! dave@dabourphoto.com or 908.995.7273
I love dance photography and the people who live it day in and out. During a recent recital dance portrait session, I had the opportunity to create some dance “family” portraits. While everyone here may not be related, they probably know each other better than if they were.
Part of the reason why this opportunity existed is something was planned. Once of the dancers needed to be distracted while something was setup.. You can see how this unfolded above. Good news: she said yes! (they are good friends). Being there to capture this special moment was priceless!
I was also able to capture some great portraits at the same time!
Ready for me to capture some amazing moments for you and your dance family? I offer the following types of dance phtography:
Dance Portraits (recital or personal/group sessions)
Action photos of dance rehearsals or recitals
Candid portraits

There are certain types of photography you won’t see advertised on my website but I’m happy to do for certain people. Autumn and Derek are one of those great couples I was honored to capture this special time for them.

I got to know them when I photographed their wedding. Both are in the health care field. The smiles you see on their faces are genuine and they are a pleasure to be around.

One of the many things I love about them is Derek’s sense of humor as demonstrated above. I have to admit I was teaching him all about “Dad jokes” he was going to have to master as a soon to be Dad.

I’ve been working with Showbiz Kidz Dance Studio for many years. In fact both of my daughters attended there as dancers long ago!
Last year like many dance studios was different becasue of Covid. There were no formal dance portraits last year. In fact there was no recital for this dance studio last year!
I’m very happy with how the dance portraits turned out this year! Above is only a small sample of some of the many portraits I was able to create for all the fantastic dancers. These are the older dancers. In another post, I’ll highlight some of the younger ones!

Bob came to me for some business portraits. Sometimes business portraits are more than just head shots. This was the case with Bob. He hosts a popular podcast and his media team wanted some updated looks for him.

The requirement was a white or off-white background, waist up and a variety of looks. Bob sent some examples along from the publicist but I could tell he was more comfortable in front of a microphone instead of a camera. This is ironic since his son was a lead in a middle school theater production that I also photographed and my wife directed!
As time went on I could see he was getting into the role and everyone was happy with the results.
This is the final photo the publicist went with for their main publicity line. I recommend you lookup the podcast and give it a listen!

Like many dance studios, they were deeply impacted by the pandemic. They didn’t perform a traditional recital this year but still wanted to capture the extreme talents of all the dancers
I normally don’t have the pleasure of photographing them. They’re regular photographer took ill and I was glad they reached out to me and I was available!
They are all extremely talented dancers and I was honored to be able to photograph them. It would have been nice to photograph them with studio lights but given the pandemic, they requested only dance studio images.
Know someone who can benefit from dance photography? I offer the following types of dance photography:
Formal dance portraits (recital or personal/groups)
Its not really as hard as you think once you get into it and think about it. The hard part is practicing it and managing the “stress” that occurs during the “shoot” since they only last a few minutes (5-10 minutes generally unless you’re fortunate).
Camera Settings – DSLR
ISO – fireworks are brighter than you think – even though it’s nighttime, set your ISO to the lowest setting. I go with 100.
Aperture – generally f8-f16 works well. f11 might be a good starting spot
Shutter Speed – (manual) Bulb and experiment with anything from 4 seconds to 30 seconds.
Tripod – a must for fireworks. If you don’t have one, get or borrow one. Otherwise try putting your camera on something sturdy like the roof of your car or a fence. But remember than you probably need to tilt your camera up somewhat unless you are going for…
