First Lutheran Church Cross

Back on March 31st, the Stewartsville Vol. Fire Co. was asked to help the First Lutheran church put up a new cross on top of the church that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy last year

More photos of the fire department helping with the church cross can be found here.

Firefighter Portraits

For some time now I’ve wanted to try taking some portraits of local firefighters. I didn’t want these to be formal photographs. I wanted them to be gritty – show the true meaning and depth it takes in volunteering to be a firefighter.

I had three local firefighters volunteer to be models and photographed them recently. Some were in front of a green screen and used to create a composite. Others were taken in front of one of the engines.

I wanted these to be lite differently and on the dark side.

Post Hurricane Assistance from Fire Department

Hurricane Sandy blew though this area on October 29, 2012. Electricity was taken out to almost all of the township residence at the height of the storm. Many homes also had damage to their roofs and trees.

The fire department made several trip to deliver non-potable water to township residence that have wells and no power for sanitary reasons. They made this trip on several occasions.

The fire company also responded to over 30 calls that were related to the hurricane. These calls were for wires down, brush fires caused by the down burning wires, fire alarms and CO alarms to name a few.

No one tells them to do this. Many of them don’t have power at their homes either. They know it’s the right thing to do and something they would want to have if it were them.

Rest In Peace Matt

Matthew Klouser, LietenantI’ve know Matt for as long as I’ve been the fire photographer for the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Company.

I remember how Matt always enjoyed sharing and helping others out. He spent time helping the newer members. He would even explain things to me when I ask questions.

I’m glad to have a nice photo of Matt in his Class A uniform to the left. Sadly I realized the need for these when another former member of 98 Fire passed away earlier this year. The call went out for a photo of Ken in his class A uniform. Since this was several years ago when Ken was active, I could only find a group photo taken on Memorial Day 2008. I had the hard task of enlarging Ken’s portion to an 11×14 portrait. It wasn’t easy but I managed to do it.

Matt also never “ran away from the camera” as some other do either in jest or just because they don’t like to have their picture taken.

Below are some of my favorites of Matt. I also created an album online containing all of the photos I’ve found of Matt that I’ve taken over the years.

His passing has been difficult for many members of the Fire Company which is certainly understandable. For them and to Matt’s friends and relatives, my condolences. He’s gone but not forgotten.

Silhouetting A Volunteer

Last night I was photographing the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Co. performing a live burn drill at the Warren County Fire Academy.

As dusk was settling in I noticed one of the participants up on the roof. I could have adjusted my camera settings to capture his face but I though the silhouette was a much better photograph.

It captures the spirit of both volunteering and serving your community. All of these people probably had better things to do on a Monday evening. But practicing and learning new life saving skills is paramount to these volunteer and thank God it is!
