I am thrilled to officially launch a brand-new portrait experience for dancers: NYC Skyline Sessions! There is something inherently dramatic about pairing classical technique and contemporary lines with the gritty, grand architecture of the New York City skyline.

Last week, we headed out for our very first trial run of these sessions. Joining me was one of my incredible Dance Ambassadors, Sydney (@squidneykdancer_2012), who dances out of West Jersey Youth Ballet (@westjerseyyouthballet).

Together with our first group of dancers, we set out to turn the iconic skyline into our personal stage—and the results exceeded every expectation.

The Unplanned Highlight: Indoor Terminal Magic

While we went into the day focused entirely on the iconic open-air skyline, one of the biggest highlights of the shoot ended up being an unexpected indoor location!

We stepped inside the train terminal to escape the elements for a moment, and the lighting and architectural scale inside were unbelievable. The dramatic arches and ambient light gave Sydney’s poses a sleek, high-fashion look that contrasted beautifully with the outdoor shots.

Overcoming the Elements Like Pros

Shooting outdoors in the city always brings a few wild cards. By the end of our session, the weather decided to challenge us with rolling clouds and some incredibly strong winds.

Instead of letting the weather slow us down, Sydney and the rest of the group completely embraced it. The wind added gorgeous movement to hair and costuming, and the moody sky made the city backdrop pop even more. Sydney hung in there like an absolute professional, delivering stunning lines and fierce poses right up to the final frame.
