There is something truly special about visiting the Jersey Shore in the fall. The summer crowds have thinned out, the water remains surprisingly warm, and when the autumn sunshine cooperates, it makes for the absolute perfect portrait backdrop. On a recent autumn getaway down to Long Beach Island (LBI), we discovered that dance ambassador Vivi (@balletvivi) and her family were vacationing down there at the exact same time!
With our schedules overlapping for a single day, we immediately planned an outdoor dance portrait session in and around Barnegat Light. Barnegat Light is a personal favorite spot for both of our families, and having photographed previous dance portrait sessions there, I knew the iconic landmark and surrounding landscapes would provide breathtaking variety.
Exploring Beyond the Lighthouse
While the iconic red-and-white lighthouse is always a stunning focal point, Barnegat Light offers so much natural diversity within a short walk. During our session, we ventured off the paved paths to explore the peaceful nature preserve trails and wooden boardwalk steps—it’s always amazing to remember that these lush green coastal paths sit just feet away from the open beach and crashing inlet waters!
Working outdoors with flowing fabrics, bright coastal light, and ocean breezes requires incredible adaptability, and Vivi handled every location like a seasoned pro.
Session Highlights
- Flowing Fabric Drama: Posing along the rocky jetties and sandy shores, Vivi showcased breathtaking movement as vibrant blue and red fabric trains caught the coastal breeze under brilliant blue skies.
- Lighthouse Elegance: Utilizing the historic Barnegat Lighthouse as a dramatic backdrop, Vivi executed crisp technique en pointe and fluid barefoot extensions along the rock jetty and concrete walkways.
- Coastal Railings & Waterscapes: Leaning over the waterfront railing with the sparkling blue inlet behind her, Vivi held a stunning extension en pointe with total grace.
- Nature Preserve Trail: Tucking into the wooden boardwalk stairways of the nature preserve, Vivi brought beautiful lines and warm smiles surrounded by lush coastal greenery.
